Lynnette Kari Selwyn
30, Professor of Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, and Divination, Deputy Headmistress
Basics:
Full Name: Lynnette Kari Selwyn
Nickname(s):Lynn, Selwyn, Professor Selwyn
DoB: April 17, 1992
Sexuality: Straight
The Wizarding World:
Blood Status: pureblood
Affiliated With: Neutral, Hogwarts
Wand: 10" Mahogany wood, dragon heartstring core, rather sturdy and good for Transfiguration
Patronus: Kestrel
Teaching Subjects: Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, Divination
Other Hogwarts Related: Deputy Headmistress
Pet: Beth, female Eurasian Kestrel
Appearance:
Hair: Dark brown, curly, and actually very manageable. She thinks this is one of her best physical traits, though she doesn't think too much about physical traits most of the time. Just so you know.
Eyes: Hazel with gold-white sparks; large too, like her father's, but the colour is all her mother's.
Face: soft, but not chubby. A normal face, you could say. Just slightly heart-shaped.
Body: She's 5'8", thank goodness. What it would be like to be shorter than most of your students. And while she would rather not discuss her weight (as it is rude to ask a lady) she is 130lbs.
Face Claim: not available
Other: She's pale, though looks vaguely Italian (?) due to her grandmother's (mother's side) background.
If you couldn't tell, I based the descriptions off of the image. Other than the dark curly hair, which I originally had in mind. Thank you. xD
Personality:
Lynn would like to believe that she is a good teacher. She is nearly always calm, and exudes it a lot with her presence and soft, almost lilting voice. She prefers to have a quiet class to a rambunctious one; had she attended Hogwarts, she would have been Sorted into Ravenclaw, even with her belief and skills in Divination. And while she is an organized and patient character, she knows how to flip out on some particularly annoying students.
To her colleagues¡well, she would prefer it if they only spoke of school. She doesn't like talking much, unless she is teaching or doing a Reading. Thus, you can tell she isn't an open person. However, she is not ignorant of others and the things around her just because she doesn't like to talk about herself. She likes to be knowledgeable about others, because she believes that the information she gathers would help her in the long run with her Reading.
Likes:
- card reading
- her teaching subjects
- Canada's wizarding community
- olive green
- researching more theories of magic
- creating spells
- intelligence
- crisp parchment
- academic competition (not always)
- being independent
Dislikes:
- palmistry/crystal balls
- forgetting past dreams
- bitter foods
- actual nonsense (with no meaning/reasoning behind the words)
- Sybill Trelawney
- her parents
- being old
- talkative students/gossipy people
- abosolute silence
- being very unsure (of herself, especially when predicting/Reading)
Family:
Mother: Celeste Selwyn (nee Bianco), pureblood squib, in retirement
Father: Aquila Selwyn, pureblood, retired Arithmancy professor of Canuck Wizarding Institute
Siblings: none
Others (list): Related to the late Selwyn, an old DE. Her father's brother, really.
History and Details:
Lynn grew up a relatively normal child.
But not as a normal witch.
Her mother, being an outcast pureblood squib, ignored the existence of magic as soon as she could leave home. Celeste met Aquila by accident ¨C they thought each other to be muggles. By the time they discovered each others backgrounds, they were too much ¡®in love¡¯ to leave each other because of it.
The result was a daughter who grew up in the muggle world not knowing that magic existed. She was born in York, England, but the small family moved to Canada soon after. Aquila had found himself a job in Arithmancy as a Professor in the Canuck Wizarding Institute. They moved to Ontario where he worked at the school's branch there; Lynn never knew of this until she got her letter on her ninth birthday (the education system is different from Hogwarts and much more modern xD). The young girl flipped out on her parents and spent more time at school then at home; she stayed at the main branch of the school which was located in the Rockies, Alberta side. She graduated with O+s in Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, and Divination, especially after she developed some Sight, and other miscellaneous skills.
She has just recently been recruited by Headmistress McGonagall for the AARD post. She has taught briefly before in Canada, but never for the whole year and with the entirety of the school.
Other:
Is more of a Reader than a Seer. Has been a Prophet a few times, but not many. Somewhat new to teaching, but she knows how to combine her three subjects into AARD. xDD
Role-playing Sample:
I'm going to type up her meeting with McGonagall here, when I get the chance. And if it doesn't work out, you still know who I am and what my roleplaying is like. Though not for a professor. xDD
She stared up at the immense castle, the ancient bricks looming before her. There was a definite and strong shimmer in the air that showed the extensive ward magic that was sewn into the stone and all over the grounds and in the air. It was a beautiful sight, really, but the main treasure, she guessed, was inside the building, and inside every teacher and every student.
It was Hogwarts, a magical school. She wouldn't know how to rate their teaching, though, as she had never attended such a prestigious and wizened place. As a child and through her own teenage years she had attended a much more modern school in the west, Canada to be exact. In the next year or so, she would be able to see the difference of the two magical schools, all the way across the pond.
Small lips twitched and gave into a smile as the witch stepped over the ward threshold - the tingling magic was welcoming and almost - if not surely - sentient. This would be a wonderful place to stay and teach her own, rather personal, magicks. The history of the state itself was astounding.
The summer sun was hidden as she stepped into the castle itself, the large wooden doors closing behind her. Inside, the magic was even more concentrated - she had to turn down her Sight a little to be able to take everything in. There were tendrils of magic that were young and wild, obviously belonging to students who had attended the school last year. Her sightseeing was interrupted by a short and quiet cough to the right, and immediately she saw who she was to be meeting today - the Headmistress, Minerva McGonagall.
"I see you've made it safely to our school." The older witch said, smiling gently, a strict but friendly aura about her. The curly haired witch nodded in agreement to the Headmistress's statement.
"Yes, I have. And I do believe I would be accepting your offer just from the scenery I have had the chance to witness so far. It is simply...amazing, here. I cannot possibly imagine what else you would offer to a young Reader like myself, when you have already offered the sights of a lifetime to one of us." She said, voice hinting some awe.
"Ah...Well, there are a few things I wanted to go over that I only just mentioned in that owl I sent you." Minerva began to lead the way through the winding staircases, and the younger witch watched in fascination as the stairs moved on their own accord - they seemed to be welcoming her by the way they shifted smoothly and the two ladies reached their final destination in just moments.
"Fuzzy Peaches." The grey-haired woman said to the gargoyle, and her companion was startled as the circular staircase began to move, too.
"Nice password. You are into muggle sweets?" She asked, curious.
"Not...really. One of our previous Headmasters...you must have heard of him, Albus Dumbledore? He had a sweet tooth for the muggle candy." She opened the door of the office as she said this - the room was clean though there were bobs and ends of strange things on some bookshelves and the table.
"Indeed I did, Minerva. And hello there, young lady! Welcome to Hogwarts - we portraits do hope you will like your stay here, especially as a teacher." The old wizard in the painting directly behind the desk said, blue eyes twinkling even with the paint.
"We haven't even really agreed on anything yet, Albus. And yes, Miss Selwyn, here we are." They settled into the chairs, across from each other and the large desk in between the ladies. The professor candidate felt vaguely intimidated as she realized that students would have sat where she did now, but was soon sliding into the conversation.
"Please, call me Lynn, or at least Lynnette. Most people say 'Selwyn' with a dark undertone due to my late foolhardy uncle."
"That will be acceptable, I suppose; please call me Minerva as well, since you will most likely be joining our staff by the end of today. Now, Lynnette, would you please take a look at these things I've written down here; I was thinking of hiring as not only the Professor of your Mastery subjects, but as well as Deputy Headmistress. You must understand that as Headmistress after a long and weary war that I have been completely focused in putting the school and its system back together, and have had no need to truly find a Deputy Head."
Hazel eyes scanned the parchment, taking in the little notations of what she would be doing, and what her curriculum would be centred around, due to the Ministry's wants.
"Deputy Head? I'm sorry, Headmistress, but I've never had such a high position in administration before. Surely you have other, more competent professors that could take the job?" She asked sheepishly, and actually a little worried that she would be asked to take up such a high position so soon.
"It'll be alright, I'm sure you are capable of these few tasks - I have seen your resume, after all. The other professors will be busy with new clubs this year, and they have also seen parts of your resume. I must say, we really do look forward to you joining us. The board of directors have also looked into this along with your Professor status, and have agreed to my decision." The line of McGonagall's mouth had to be considering a smirk. "Do tell me that you will be joining us?"
"I suppose I will have to, in order not to disappoint you all." She had to give a small laugh; everything was moving so fast, and she had only been at Hogwarts for a few minutes! "I should go home and pack, yes? This was originally just an interview..."
McGonagall gave her own little chuckle. "Yes, yes. Let me show you the way out; you came here by Hogsmeade, right?" They got up and Lynn gathered her papers.
"That's right. I suppose I'll be seeing you and meeting the rest of the staff soon!"
OKAY THAT WAS REALLY BAD, THAT ENDING. UGHHHH
