Hero loved it in the library. It was always dead silent; he could lose himself in the books and it would take forever for anyone to find him -- if they were looking for him, at least. Books, books, everywhere. He looked up from the book he was reading at that current moment, examining the shelves. There was this one book that he had come to the library to look for, but…he hadn’t been able to find it, and he got distracted by another book that was on a similar subject.
He found himself thinking about how it was the first day of classes, about how exciting it was, even though it wasn’t the first day of school. The first day of academic studies. It was enough to just be forced to stay home, where there weren’t any magical libraries nearby, but now he was, and he had stuff to do. He could talk with people he hadn’t talked with since the school year ended, everything.
Hero found himself thinking about Thad. He hadn’t talked to Thad since they got back to Hogwarts, merely because he couldn’t find the other; he missed him. But…he was a seventh year by this point, and Hero was only a lowly fourth year. They had absolutely no classes together, and Hero was sure Thad would have a lot of homework; it also didn’t help that they were in two different houses. But…they would talk. Hero would make sure of it.
Although…he suddenly grew worried that he was becoming a bit too clingy to Thad. If that was the case, then he would most likely grow annoyed by the fourth year and go to one of the other seventh years for a friend instead. But…he was sure he wasn’t, and that was good enough for him.
Hero plucked the quill from behind his ear, tapping it on the book; it had no ink on it, so he wasn’t worried about marking it up. But…there was something missing in this book that he was sure that he could get from the other book he was looking for. He was sure it was in this section, but it didn’t matter anymore. He dipped the quill in the ink bottle and began writing on the parchment.
book missing important things about particular type of spell. Says what to say for a particu. spell, but nothing on the wand mov, or the other spells nor on what unifies the spells. need other book. ask around, see if anyone already borrowed it? check w/seven years, cha
He hesitated, looking back at the bookshelves. What if…he had been looking in the wrong place? He kept looking at eye level and a little above, but it was totally possible that it was way above him. He suddenly got up from his seat and walked over to where he had thought the book was, looking up. Sure enough, there the book was -- way out of his reach.
”Crap,” Hero muttered to himself before pointing his wand in its general direction. Now to try and get the book to come to him without making the rest of the books on the shelf fall…

Thaddeus spent most of his free time in the library-- he was even known to skip a class to spend more time in the library to work on some sort of project or another. But for the first day of school, there wasn't quite any work to do-- he had already finished what had been assigned today at least, and there were no outstanding projects he needed to dedicate his time to just yet. So he had arrived in the library hoping to find something to read on the side—the mind had to stimulated in other manners besides school work.
He made his way to fiction section and, as per usual, headed straight for Shakespeare. Hogwarts’ fiction section was not quite vast, but they did have all of his works. He browsed through the shelves of his work, deciding that he would start the year off with one of his favorites—Macbeth. He picked it up, running a finger almost lovingly down the worn spine of the book.
‘Starting off the year quite socially, aren’t we Thaddeus?’
Thad had to stop himself from groaning and thus disturbing the perfect silence of library. Of course he was back, just when he thought he had some peace of mind for a moment. But he should of expected that, it was rather typical of his voice—Iago. He didn’t reply, but bit his lip, a bit of doubt filling his mind. Maybe it would have been better to try and socialize with his house-mates, or even better, he could have gone out and found Hero.
’What makes you think he’d even want to hang out with you anyway?’
He snorted, as though amused by the suggestion. If he could be sure of anything at the moment, it was that he did want to see Hero, even though he was much older and in a different house than the boy. He exited the fiction aisle, noting that he should probably pick up a charms book for the research paper he had heard tell about from the Slytherins and Ravenclaws earlier in the day. He turned into the aisle, then smiled, seeing Hero with his wand pulled out, obviously trying to summon a book.
He stayed quiet, and walked up behind him, reaching for his wand and correcting the posture. “The incantation is ‘accio’, Hero.” He instructed, smiling slightly. He wouldn’t be learning that charm until the middle of this year, but he appreciated the younger boy’s interest in more complex spells and learning.

It was a good thing that Thad had come and corrected Hero when he did; Hero was nearly about to try using wingardium leviosa. Thinking about it now, though, he realized that it was a bad move to make; had he done so, numerous books would have, most likely, been affected by the spell, and the one thing that he had wanted to avoid doing would happen.
When Thad had come over, though, and corrected his posture, Hero made a startled noise, not having seen him approaching. Once he spoke, though, Hero relaxed and smiled. Guess that streak of them not seeing each other had now been remedied. But he wasn’t going to turn to look at him until he got the book down. Using the posture that Thad had corrected, he gave a slight flick of his wand towards the book. ”Accio,” he murmured, so as to try and seem even more impressive by making it seem like he used the spell non-verbally.
When it didn’t work, he frowned. There seemed to be something missing from the incantation. Had he had the posture wrong? No, because Thad had corrected him with the spell in mind (he believed). But…he remembered something from one of his books. He had merely glanced past the page, because he had been looking for a particular spell. He could remember it vaguely, though. He had to keep the object in mind, if he remembered correctly, and focus on it; in the actual incantation, he had to say the name of the object.
He closed his eyes and pointed the wand towards the book. ”Let’s try this again,” he muttered, opening his eyes once more and flicking his wand. ”Accio Advanced Charms and Spells.” The book shot out from the bookshelf and fell towards Hero, who caught it in his arms. A wide smile spread across his face; he turned to Thad, thrilled.
”Thank you so much,” he told him. ”I…was about to make a mistake and make all of the books fall.” He chuckled, holding the book in his right hand and scratching his head sheepishly. ”Thank you for helping me before I made a fool of myself.” Hero looked at the book that Thad had in his hand. ”Macbeth? ‘Stars, hide your fires! Let not light see my black and deep desires.’ Act one, scene four, yeah?” He chuckled lightly. ”Sorry. I’m sure you came to the library for quiet, it’s just…I haven’t seen you in a while.”
Oh, how he had missed Thad.

Thad waited patiently for Hero’s attempt, relatively sure that the boy would be successful with his correction. Though Hero was merely a fourth year, he had quite impressive magical prowess. But then again, he was a Ravenclaw, and a damn smart one at that. If there was anything that Thad could appreciate, it was one who had been endowed with such innate intelligence, and that was one of the things that was so endearing about the boy. He was sure that Iago would torment him about this chance meeting later in the evening, but for now Thad was grateful he was silent.
He watched the boy try and fail, realizing he forgot to mention that he had to call the object by name, especially if it was his first time performing the charm. If he was more practiced at the spell, and knew exactly the object he was looking for, he wouldn’t have to name the object. He was about to open his mouth to apologize for leaving out that part of the spell, but suddenly Hero had spoken the full incantation and had the book zooming towards him. Thad smiled encouragingly, seeing the delight on the boys face.
“Excellent, that was excellent spell work.” Thad said, a little flustered by the look the younger boy had given him—such a charming face he had. Thad did not hide his own sexual persuasion, though it wasn’t often he was asked, or expressed interest in any other student. Hero had certainly never asked, only verifying further what Thad had feared and Iago had tormented him with.
It’s not like he could like someone such as you, anyway Thaddeus. The voice responded snidely.
Thad bit down on the inside of his cheek, and then forced a smile for Hero. “Not a problem.” He replied, waving his hand as though to dismiss the thanks he was receiving. He liked to think that he would have done it for any other student, but that wasn’t true. Hero had always been an exception. Hero then commented on his book choice, quoting perhaps one of Thad’s favorite lines. “Right you are.” He said, nodding and in return quoting. “There’s daggers in men’s smiles.” He retorted, smiling as though to prove his point.
His face softened a bit at Hero’s apology, shaking his head. “No need to apologize. I just came to pick up a few things to read before I have too much school work.” He said with a small shrug. He was glad to have run into Hero—he had kept to himself for the most part, explaining things to the muggleborn first years that were in awe that they were on their way to Hogwarts. He had done so practically every year since his third year, after getting stuck in a car with a bunch of them. He had ended up enjoying his time there, and it was nice to talk to some students that didn’t already have some preconceived notions of him.

Oh, how Hero loved Thad’s company. Sure, he always felt like…like he didn’t want to be just friends, that he wanted to be more than just that, but he didn’t see that happening. Ever. But he was fine with just Thad’s company, just being able to talk with him, all that stuff. One day in the future, maybe it might just ending up slipping out, but Hero didn’t want to ruin the friendship they already had. So he just kept quiet, hoping that the inevitable day wasn’t coming anytime in the near future.
Hero was thrilled that he got the book down, though. A little more thrilled that he remembered the rest of it from the book that he had been reading the previous night, during the (apparently notorious) Gryffindor party, even making it so he slept in accidentally. But no matter; from what he heard of the party, he would not have liked it at all, and the only thing he missed was a little bit of Care of the Magical Creatures on the first day -- like that was going to be hard to make up.
He blushed lightly at Thad’s compliment, biting on his lip to try and make it go away. ”Thank you,” he replied, tucking his wand away and pulling the book closer to his chest, crossing his arms in front of it and clutching it tightly. He had won this prize; he wasn’t going to let go of it until he had exhausted it of materials. At the library, he would often grab a spell book or whatever, sit down with it, and try to go through it, writing out all of the notes that he deemed interesting or important; he had learned many things through that method, including some magic that he wasn’t ready for yet.
If Hero realized that the smile Thad gave him was forced, he didn’t realize it. He nodded as Thad dismissed the thanks that he had given him, smiling. ”You…would have done it for any one else, yeah?” he asked, chuckling lightly. He smiled a bit wider as he realized that he quoted Macbeth correctly; he hadn’t read Macbeth in a while. He had it in his bag, if he was correct; he always brought a couple of his favorite books with him, which always included Shakespeare. The particular books he had brought with him had been Othello and Much Ado About Nothing (it wasn’t often you got to read about how someone with your name fell in love with someone else, especially with a name like Hero); he would have brought more, but his mother had restricted him.
”I don’t think I realized they had Shakespeare here,” Hero remarked. ”It’s so big and I never even thought about venturing too far from the magic books.” He chuckled sheepishly. ”Interesting to know, though. I’ll never be bored, that’s for sure.” He grinned lightly at the other.
He paused at the comment. ”The Charms project thing, right?” Hero asked. ”Yeah, I heard some seventh years complaining about that earlier today. Seventh year sounds like fun.” He paused for a moment. ”Oh, I nearly forgot. Did you…want to sit with me? I was able to grab a table.” He motioned in the direction of the table with his head, seeing how his hands were busy. ”So we can catch up? If you want to, I mean.”

It was almost sort of saddening, the age difference between the two. Though Thad was looking forward to graduation at the end of this year and the multitudes of positive effects that would produce—legally being considered an adult, being able to leave home, to start working in the wizarding world—he would no longer have this time with Hero. The boy had three years left once Thad graduated, and Thad very much regretted that he wouldn’t be here to experience it as well. There was so much he would be left out of—so many new spells that he would have wanted to help Hero learn, so many books he would want to recommend to him.
But he knew he had to be content with what he had—he had gotten to spend four years with the boy, more than he could say he had spent in the companionship of students in his own house and year. Their friendship was quite star-crossed—the fact they had made it this far was pleasantly surprising to Thad at the very least. Like the younger boy, he too had avoided the Gryffindor party. He didn’t like the idea of being in the Lion’s Den itself, surrounded by many lewd boys and promiscuously thick girls. Besides, he tried his best to avoid liquor in most given situations—his family history had taught him better than that.
Thad realized he had been focused off into the bookshelves, then pretended to have been looking for something, pulling out a book as if to examine it, and then hastily putting it back when he realized it was a Divination book. He glanced back at the boy, but did not notice the blush that had broken out across the boy’s face. He had never been very good at reading people; one had to be close enough to know people in order to better read them. He was far better with books, where all the information was laid out for the whole world to see. It was much easier that way.
Thad smiled, nodding at the boy’s comment about the library’s Shakespeare collection. “They have more of the classic muggle fiction works over in that corner.” He said, pointing towards the farthest corner of the library, bordering the Restricted Section. “They have most of Shakespeare’s work, thankfully. They’re lacking some of the histories though—The Henry’s, The Richards, so on and so forth.” It wasn’t a terrible loss in Thad’s opinion. After all, he had always preferred the tragedies over the others, as they spoke better to him, and they’re plots and language tended to be much more eloquent.
He nodded, confirming that he soon had to start working on the charms project. It wouldn’t be too difficult. He would probably do a paper on the Fidelius Charms and its effects on the parties in question. It seemed simple enough for him, but would be considered a challenged at the very least by his professor. At Hero’s comment about seventh year, Thad’s mind turned again to graduation. He had to work hard this year, especially with his goal of being an auror in mind. Half the school didn’t seem to know what they wanted to do when it came to after graduation, but Thad prided himself in having a goal at the very least. Thad smiled at the offer, replying with a quick nod and a “Sure.” He wanted desperately to be able to simply chat with Hero—it had been far too long in his opinion, and it would be a nice distraction for all these thoughts about life after Hogwarts and having to leave.

Hero watched the other appear like he was looking at the bookcase, then grab a book and quickly put it back. Hero gave a small laugh. Oh, how much he’d miss Thad when the year ended. The thought made his smile fall -- that’s right. Thad was only going to be here for another year, and then he was off to do whatever he wanted. Hero didn’t want to have his closest friend leave -- but it displayed a perfect opportunity for him. He could easily tell Thad about how he felt about him at some point this year, and, when Thad rejected him and began ignoring him, it would almost be like…preparation for not even being able to see him, let alone talk to him.
”Oh,” Hero said as Thad told him where the muggle fiction was, smiling sheepishly -- trying to hide the falter in his demeanor. ”Yeah, suppose it wasn’t too bright to assume they didn’t have such iconic works in such a large library.” He shrugged, chuckling lightly in embarrassment. ”Well, that’s not a huge loss. The tragedies are the ones that I really go for. But, of course, I adore Much Ado About Nothing.” He gave a faint smile and shook his head.
Hero paused for a moment, noting how quiet Thad was. Was he just talking that much, that Thad couldn’t get a word in edgewise? Hero found himself feeling bad; he hadn’t meant to be like that. He was just so excited to have found him, finally, that it was…quite obvious. He bit his lip lightly, resting his chin on the book slightly. Was Thad thinking about something? Sometimes, Hero couldn’t read him -- while it sort of added a level of mystery to the whole thing, sometimes it made Hero feel sort of…left out. He wanted to be closer to Thad, but…there seemed to be something he was hiding. And if he didn’t want Hero to know, Hero wasn’t going to press him.
As soon as Thad nodded, Hero grabbed his arm gently and began to tug him over to the table, happy that he agreed. He looked at Thad after a moment, tilting his head. ”So…how was your summer?” he asked. Hopefully, it was better than his own; he found that he couldn’t stand to be home over the summer, with his mother -- after the pills came around to help him, she just…fell apart. He didn’t want to go home anymore.

Thad smiled lightly at Hero’s comment, shaking his head for a moment. “Well it is a magical library. I understand why you wouldn’t think it was there. But I suppose they figured they had to cater to muggleborns such as myself.” He said, eyes crinkling with his smile as he glanced down at the boy. He was too hard on himself sometimes—Thad knew he was an amazingly intelligent boy, and greatly appreciated and respected that about him. Thad nodded in agreement at the boys comment about the histories. It was clear as to why he loved Much Ado About Nothing. Thad was sure that if there was a character who shared his name in one of Shakespeare’s works, he would be quite partial to it as well.
Thad couldn’t help but smile for a moment, especially because of Hero’s current position. He just looked so…cute the way he had rested his head on his book. He was surprised that ‘cute’ was the word that popped into his head.
And why is that, Thaddeus? We both know you’re as flaming as Guy Fawkes Day. the voice added snidely.
Thad grit his teeth, inhaling and then exhaling softly. Normally, he would have snapped at the voice already, but he tried his best to stay calm, especially around Hero. He cared about his opinion more highly than anything, and had always worried, in the past and even now, that he would come off as ‘too crazy’ for Hero.
He had barely agreed to join Hero at his table for a chat, that he was grabbed and tugged over to one of the library tables on the side of the library. He slid into a seat, placing his copy of Macbeth in front of him and folding his hands in front of him, smiling gently at Hero’s look. When asked about his summer, his smile faltered a bit, and he took a moment, deciding it was better to simply lie, rather than try to explain his situation at home. “It was…fine.”
He had spent most of the summer at the hospital, visiting his sister. His mother rarely went anymore, claiming that it was too depressing for her. Most days, she simply sat at home, watching soap operas and doing nothing. His father worked most days, and just came home to drink and sleep. He was the only one that really visited his sister anymore. When visiting hours were over, he simply went to the library until closing time, then snuck back into his house when he was sure his family had been asleep.
Thad never liked to talk about his family; he would rather keep it to himself. After all, as the voice tended to remind him, it was his fault. To let other people know would simply verify this fact for him—something he didn’t want or need.

”True,” Hero agreed. ”I do suppose they have to make sure everyone’s interests are being brought out in the library. Would hate for people to be bored while in a magical school.” He gave a slight grin, now letting his mind roam with what bored wizards would do if they were unable to be occupied with something or other. He shook his head, returning to his smile. He loved Thad’s smile so much. The way it just seemed to light up the room, how it made Hero smile even more. Everything about it. It looked so beautiful on Thad, he just…he wanted Thad to smile forever.
Hero raised an eyebrow as Thad exhaled, making a bit of a face. He gave a slight frown. ”Something wrong, Thad?” he asked his friend, sitting down in the seat across from Thad. He closed the book he was looking at before and put it to the side, setting the one that Thad helped him get down on the table in front of himself, leaning on it slightly. He grabbed the parchment that he had been writing on earlier and placing it on the book facedown. There wasn’t really a need for it anymore, but whatever. He always liked to keep his notes, even if they provided nothing. If he put the effort into making the notes, he might as well keep them, as he always thought.
Hero smiled once more. ”Well, at least it was fine, right?” he asked. If he noticed the falter in Thad’s smile, he ignored it; it wasn’t long enough for him to have noticed. He nodded slightly towards Thad, letting his fingers tap against the book that he had helped Hero get. Oh, how much he was going to miss Thad when he left; he didn’t even know what he would do without his seventh year friend.
He looked down at the book for a moment. ”Do you know what the assignment for the Charms project is? Because if you want, I can help you look for books to help with that,” Hero said, looking back up at him. He always loved to try to do work that was above his year, because then he always seemed so very intelligent in comparison -- it helped to understand what was going on in class, it helped him to do well on homework and projects, and it made it so he wasn’t completely lost when he had one of his…off days.
((So sorry for the bad reply. Again.))

Thad nodded at Hero’s comment. He could imagine what it was like for a muggle-born student to be overwhelmed by the magical sections of the library. He probably would have been one of those students if his brother hadn’t gone to Hogwarts before him. Thad had always found it odd that both he and his brother had been able to go to Hogwarts, though his sister had no magical ability. But he had never understood the logistics of the muggle-born status and simply had to deal with the fact that he and his brother were the only ones. He didn’t like talking about his brother though, and when most people asked, he simply stated that he was the only one to go to Hogwarts in his family.
Thad looked surprised, as though he hadn’t expected Hero to notice the face he had made. He bit his tongue, cursing his inability to hide his discomfort in front of the boy. “No, just a headache. Don’t worry about me.” He said, smiling as an attempt to comfort the younger boy. He honestly didn’t want Hero to worry about him, it wasn’t fair to the boy to have to worry about someone like Thad. He honestly was starting to get a headache now—avoiding confrontation with the voice always left him with a headache, but it was a sacrifice he had to make in order to appear normal.
“Yes, it was all right I suppose.” Thad said, giving a quick nod, examining Hero’s smile with quite an interest. It was a great smile, far better than most of the boys in his own year and in other years. He had always felt that sort of attraction to other guys, but no one really compared to the way that he felt about Hero. At first, he had been a bit confused about the way he felt—he still was a bit confused, if he was being honest with himself—but tried his best to treat Hero the way he would have treated a younger brother. Still, Thad knew that wasn’t what he wanted. But that’s simply how he had to act and get by. It wasn’t like the boy would ever feel that way about him.
Thad couldn’t help but smile at the boy’s offer to help. “It’s a research paper on an advanced charm of our choosing.” He explained, gesturing to the Charms section behind them. “I was thinking about doing the effects of the Fidelius Charm on the parties in question. Simple enough, I’m sure, but if you don’t have too much work to do, I would love the help.” Any excuse to spend time with Hero was appreciated by Thad. After all, he had to utilize what time he had left here at school and with him.

Hero paused for a moment, thinking back. Hadn’t Thad mentioned that he was the only one to go to Hogwarts in his family? He wasn’t exactly sure, so he merely remained quiet; he didn’t want to be wrong and possibly get Thad angry and/or annoyed. Hero often did that -- if he wasn’t 100% sure of something, he merely remained quiet. It’s another reason why he liked to read ahead in his textbooks and stuff like that -- the teachers appreciated interaction from the students, and it wasn’t too easy to focus on class when you merely remain silent for the whole time. He didn’t like to be wrong; if he was too wrong in some cases, the feelings of self-loathing would come back and he probably wouldn’t be seen for the rest of the day.
Hero nodded as Thad replied, relaxing slightly. ”All right,” he said, smiling in return. ”Sorry if I’m not exactly…helping your headache.” He stopped the tapping on the book, merely folding his arms together. He always was very sympathetic when someone else was suffering from a headache -- he sometimes got them when on his pills, really bad ones that kinda made it so he just wanted everything to shut up. Sometimes, he would even go so far as to cast some sort of charm on himself to either make the noises lower or non-existent in the middle of class, copying the notes from someone who was sitting near him or later on from someone who took really good notes.
He tilted his head, though, as Thad examined him. ”Is there something wrong?” he asked, curious as to why Thad was so interested in him. ”Don’t tell me there’s something in my teeth from a while ago.” Now that he thought about it, he hadn’t eaten since the welcome feast the previous night. Damn his pills; they often led him to accidentally miss meals, often more than once in one day. But no matter -- he could eat with Thad tonight, if Thad didn’t mind. Well, if Thad was even going to eat.
Thad’s smile was contagious. Hero smiled as soon as Thad smiled again, nodding in response. ”Sounds quite interesting,” he replied. ”The first thing that had come to mind was the Protean Charm, but your idea would probably inspire a more…interesting paper.” He chuckled. ”Anyway, I don’t have any work to do right now. It’s why I decided to come down here and look for the book.” He put his hand down on Advanced Charms and Spells, patting it slightly. He paused for a moment. ”I’m…not too sure about Hogwarts’s barriers against spells like these, but maybe we can try and perform a sort of…real example of it on a broom closet or something? And we can be the secret-keepers?” He shrugged. ”It seems like a rather juvenile and stupid idea, I know, but what better way to find out the effects of the Fidelius Charm on the parties in question than to try it yourself?”

Thad gave a little chuckle at Hero’s apology, lowering his eyes. The boy was so modest sometimes, another attractive quality of his. He never meant to insult or hurt anyone’s feelings, more than Thad could say about himself. While Hero was the type to stay quiet, Thad was quite blatant when he was bothered by something or someone. Probably didn’t help his so-called reputation, but Thad didn’t particularly care. “It’s fine. I’ll simply take some aspirin when I get back to my dorm. No need to concern yourself.” He replied, giving a small sheepish smile.
He must have been staring; he realized a bit late when Hero asked him what was wrong or if there was something in his teeth. His ears turned a bit red, and Thad shook his head quickly, looking a bit embarrassed. “No, nothing wrong at all. I was just… I’m a bit tired and I suppose I was just dazing off.” He said, and then quickly realized his mistake. “But I’m enjoying myself.” He added, smiling as a sign of reassurance, inwardly cursing at himself. How could he be so stupid? He should have just admitted what he was looking at.
But you would have been rejected anyway. By the way, really smooth cover. the voice added, sounding extremely amused by Thad’s distress.
Happy that there was some sort of distraction, he responded quickly, giving a quick nod to Hero’s comments on the project. “I was considering the Protean Charm.” Thad admitted, smiling carefully. “As well as what inspires different forms in Patronus Charms. Actually, I haven’t really officially decided. I’ll do more research on the Patronus and the Fidelius Charm before I make my final decision.” He said, pulling out one of the Charms books he had brought with him.
Thad considered the boy’s proposition for a moment, raising his hand to his chin and placing a finger onto his lips, contemplating. “The only problem I can see with that is Filtch losing some of his cleaning supplies.” He said with a small smile, chuckling lightly. “Better yet, we can use one of the abandoned class rooms on practically every floor. They’re only used for snogging anymore anyway.” He added as a playful afterthought. The idea did seem childish, but Thad rarely was able to anything childish any more. “We could always try it, even if it doesn’t work, I always have the Patronus paper to fall back on.”

Hero nodded. ”All right, Thad,” he said. ”Just tell me if you need anything, all right?” He smiled a bit wider at him. He would do anything for Thad -- Thad was his closest friend, someone he looked up to, someone who was like an older brother to him. But…it didn’t satiate his want to be more. He wanted to kiss Thad, to hold him close and be held close. But that wasn’t going to happen. He knew that, but…he couldn’t help it. Damn crush.
He gave a light chuckle as Thad’s ears turned red in response to Hero catching him. ”I didn’t mean to embarrass you, if that’s what happened,” he replied. ”I was just worried there was something wrong.” Hero picked his quill up and examined the tip, dipping it in the ink and grabbing the parchment once more and beginning to write.

He looked up at Thad once more, blushing. ”Sorry, I just wanted to write something down before I forgot,” he said, putting the parchment away, trying to make it so Thad wasn’t able to read it. He smiled at Thad. ”So long as you’re enjoying yourself, right?”
Hero nodded, thinking about those options. ”The Patronus idea would definitely be interesting. Like, what type of personality causes what type of form, right? It’s definitely an interesting concept,” he replied, looking off to the side. He…could never quite summon a Patronus. Or, at least, one that could be of any use. Whenever he tried to do so, he always ended up thinking about why, exactly, he was trying to use the damn spell, and flip out, thinking about -- them. And it didn’t even matter; the mention of the black-hooded creatures always frightened Hero, let alone facing them. He’d never be able to cast the spell in the real world because he’d probably be paralyzed by fear, unable to lift his wand up, let alone think of a “happy thought”.
He nodded once more as Thad pointed out the flaw in his idea. He opened his mouth to agree and to denounce his idea a little more, but then he cut him off in order to propose a better idea. Hero smiled rather widely, nodding. ”That’s a fantastic idea,” he said. ”No one will miss them -- well, other than the people who can’t keep it in their pants.” He gave a slight grin at his joke, hoping Thad wouldn’t think it was too immature. ”Yeah, you always have the back up, just in case. And if it does work…” He chuckled. ”Well, if it does work, you’ll be able to make a fantastic essay and we’ll have a secret place.” He winked. He liked this idea, oh yes.

“Thank you, but I’ll be fine.” Thad replied, his ears still rather red, though this time he was a bit embarrassed by Hero’s concern. He appreciated the concern, but he certainly wasn’t used to it. He had grown up in a household where he was the middle child—rarely heard and not really bothered with. Both of his siblings had caused trouble in one way or another; his brother’s trouble with the law and his sister’s sickness had left Thad to fend for himself as the family concern fell elsewhere.
He felt foolish, blushing like that. Showing such obvious emotion like that wasn’t like Thad. He was good at concealing his true feelings, his true self, and knew he was better than this. But there was something about Hero that was like a key—it unlocked and let flow things that came straight from Thad’s heart, despite his attempts to stop or slow the flow. “No, nothing wrong.” He allowed quietly, diverting his eyes for a moment to pick up his own book and flip through it, trying to look busy for a moment or two. When he felt the heat in his ears fade away, he was able to glance back up again, smiling gently, looking a bit relieved.
He saw him writing something down, but didn’t question as to what it was. He was used to the boy taking notes like that—he had always done that and Thad was sure he always would. Hero reflected on the possible essay options, and Thad was quite interested in what he had to say. The boy was intelligent for only being a fourth year and despite having three years less experience in magic than Thad himself. “Have you learned how to produce a patronus yet?” he inquired of the boy, smiling encouragingly. It was a complicated bit of magic, but he was sure someone like Hero could manage. If not, it could be something else he could teach him. He loved encouraging and teaching him, especially if it provided more time spent with him.
Hero seemed to like his idea for the Fidelius Charm, however, though Thad had only suggested half-heartedly. It was true, they could do that, and simply break the charm at the end of the year. Thad spoke, choosing his words carefully; “We’ll have to try it then. Hopefully the magic won’t be too offensive to the castle.” He said, nodding thoughtfully. His lips tightened into a wider grin at Hero’s joke, but he said nothing, his own secret thoughts parading around in his head. The prospect of a secret room that only they could share… His imagination could run wild…

”If you say so,” Hero replied, letting out a light chuckle. It’s odd for a fourth year to tell a seventh year to come to him if he had any problems, but Hero really could care less. Thad had been there for him for however many years it had been since they met, and Hero had yet to return the favor. He owed Thad a lot, including so many of the charms he had mastered way before they ever mentioned them in class, so much happiness he had throughout his time at Hogwarts, everything. It hurt to think of what he would do without the other once he left.
Hero had noticed how he had blushed, but he figured it was merely the embarrassment of Hero having caught him dazing off. He gave a light chuckle, nodding as Thad spoke. ”Sorry for making you blush,” he said once Thad finished, lowering his head slightly. ”Again, I really didn’t mean to.” It never once occurred to Hero why Thad acted the way he did around him; how he blushed, how he showed his feelings, everything. He figured that he was just a good friend, and left it at that. Although, watching his ears turn red and then retreat to his book to try and calm himself down did make Hero slightly curious. Was there something going on that Hero didn’t know about?
All thoughts were expelled from his mind as Thad asked him his question. He began to remember all of his attempts at conjuring a patronus by himself in a spare classroom -- they almost all ended up with him in the corner, sobbing as he remembered the way the Dementors felt as they neared him, as they began to give him the kiss, about how everything seemed hopeless. He shook his head, biting his lip. Maybe…if anyone could help him to conjure a patronus (unlikely), it would be Thad. He could help him try and get over the damn phobia he had -- how was he supposed to be a hit-wizard/auror if he was unable to be near a Dementor? He shuddered, then remembered that Thad was there and did his best to form a false smile. He didn’t want Thad to worry and, honestly, he’d do almost anything if it meant more time with him.
And yet…his inner thoughts nagged him. Why would Thad bother to be with him? Be near him? Sure, they had a lot of the same likes and dislikes, but there was a three-year difference between them. Thad had no reason to bother himself with someone like Hero, and yet he did. Why? It confused Hero deeply, but he didn’t mind it -- as long as he had Thad with him, he didn’t care.
Hero gave a small chuckle as Thad spoke. ”Yes, hopefully,” he replied. ”If we are able to take the room without complaints, then we can use that for practicing spells and stuff, yeah?” His false smile became real at that moment, almost seeming like a kid thinking about going to the candy store -- a room just for him and Thad, where they could do whatever they wanted…his cheeks blushed at the ideas that he came up with.

Thad did appreciate that Hero cared enough to ask if he needed anything, though from any outside perspective it may seem a bit weird. He often wondered what people thought of he and Hero’s relationship, but then realized how little he cared about what others think. No matter what they thought, he would continue to stick around him. He enjoyed his company, so what did it matter what others thought of the two. Thad had never been much to care about gossip and rumors and such, if only to expel certain rumors about his own sanity.
Thad honestly couldn’t believe how childish he was looking—blushing so obviously like this. “It’s all right…” Thad said, doing his best to smile for the boy. He was no longer blushing at this point, something he was grateful for. He didn’t want Hero to become suspicious of his actions—he liked the way things were at the moment, and he didn’t want to ruin it with hopes of something that he doubted could ever happen. All romantic thoughts that he may have for Hero were squashed by his doubt that it would probably never happen.
All Thad got in response to his question was simply a shake of the head, and he frowned a bit before turning the frown into an encouraging smile. “Hey, if you want help, you know I’m always available.” Thad added, raising his brows and shrugging. Thad had been able to create a patronus for a while now, ever since his fifth year. It wasn’t something that Hogwarts taught, but rather something Thad had taught himself. Thad had never been comfortable around dementors—after all, he had been the only one in his family that could go to Azkaban to deal with his brother’s incarceration. He had learned the technique because of that; so that he could have something to feed the dementors rather than allowing himself to succumb to the insanity that became even worse around the dementors. “I think what most people forget is that it doesn’t always have to be a memory that summons a patronus. Just a happy thought.” He added, pulling out his wand with a small smile and placing it down on the table. “Could even be a dream or a wish.” He said with a smile. At least, that’s what his thought was when he performed a patronus charm.
Thad nodded quickly, smiling at Hero’s suggestion. “Yeah, of course we could.” he said, laughing a bit. Hero seemed so excited by the idea of a private room for themselves, and Thad wondered what aspect Hero was really excited about. He assumed that he was actually excited about learning some new charms and such. Hero was always excited about that sort of thing, and Thad knew he shouldn’t assume that it was anything more than that.

If asked, Hero would say that he never actually cares about what people think of his relationship with Thad -- but he probably would ask someone (probably someone close to him) what he or she thought Thad felt about Hero. He was never good at reading into people, and he…he liked Thad a little too much to let it just go without ever trying to see if he’s got any sort of feelings towards him. But he didn’t want to risk what they had in pursuit of more; he always thought about the tale of the dog with two bones at this point. Where the greedy dog, who already had one bone, went to a lake and, looking in it, saw another dog with a bone. He opened his mouth to take it from him -- and in the process, lost his own bone into the murky depths. A rather depressing fable, yes, but it kept Hero from taking that extra step in pretty much everything.
He smiled in response to Thad. Now, however, Hero had started blushing rather than Thad, so it didn’t really matter. The moment he realized he was blushing, his face flushed even more and he cleared his throat, looking down at his book. But the thought of doing a Patronus made the blush fall from his face. He looked back at Thad, biting his lip. He nodded again slightly, feeling bad -- Thad had been frowning, that much Hero had caught. But…he didn’t want Thad to frown because of him. He cleared his throat, trying to make it so his fear wasn’t clearly evident in his voice. ”That…would be fantastic,” he replied, slightly failing in keeping his voice regular. He took a few breaths, nibbling on the inside of his lip. Thad didn’t need to see Hero like this, seeming so weak and fearful. This wasn’t who Hero was. He paused as he watched the other put his wand on the table, listening to what he said. His mind lit up with the possibilities -- all involving Thad. He relaxed significantly, nodding. He cleared his throat once more. ”That’s a good idea,” he said. ”I had…tried to do it before,” his voice hitched slightly, but he cleared his throat once more and pressed on, ”But I had always tried to use memories, and…well, my joyful memories aren’t enough, I’ve found.” It mainly stemmed off of his phobia -- dementors affected him more, so he needed a stronger memory in order to fend them off, in order to make a good Patronus. ”It’s a good idea.”
Hero laughed as well, looking down at his book in order to hide the blush that had formed again. ”I like this idea,” he replied, grinning lightly. ”Perhaps…we could try and work on my using of the Patronus there, away from prying eyes.” And perhaps there I can finally tell you how I feel about you, he added silently -- but he said nothing more. His mind roamed with the possibilities of what could happen; first he thought about successfully conjuring a Patronus -- but needing to hold Thad’s hand in order to do it. But the images only declined after that -- getting Thad angry with him, or upset, or not seeing him at all, merely because he told him how he truly felt about him. But…Hero didn’t know for how much longer he could keep it to himself. He needed to tell someone soon. Preferably Thad himself.

Thad noticed the flush of the other boy’s face, and smiled to himself. At least when the other boy blushed, it was quite amusing and cute. He didn’t mind the blush on the boy’s face, in fact, he preferred it like that. However, when the boy spoke, his voice didn’t sound quite right. He sounded nervous or something of the sort, and Thad looked curiously at the boy. All he had suggested was that he help him learn how to produce a patronus; nothing that was all that frightening. Perhaps he was just nervous about failing in front of Thad, so Thad tried his best to smile encouragingly.
“I ran into the same problem when I first tried.” Thad replied, nodding since he understood Hero’s problem. He hardly had a huge amount of joyful memories to choose from, so he had done his research, and found that most people used wishes and dreams. Apparently so long as the emotion behind the thought was real, it worked just as well. Thad wondered if they had the same problem when it came to dementors. Thad’s schizophrenia became much worse whenever he was around the dementors—the voices became overwhelming, so much so that he couldn’t function until he was away from them.
“I’ll have to do a bit of research, but I’m sure we could perform the Fidelius Charm relatively soon.” Thad replied, picking his wand back up and summoning his own charms book non-verbally. It landed on the table besides his copy of Macbeth, and he flipped it open to a chapter describing the Fidelius charm. The Charm seemed quite complex, but he figured they would be able to manage. He assumed they would both have to be made Secret-Keepers, seeing as according to the book, the secret would be stored within their souls. If it was anything else, it would seem like a very large commitment. But it was simply a room, so he did not panic. In fact, it would be nice to have a place to his own, if he only had to share it with someone like Hero.
“Of course, I’d really like that.” Thad added, lowering his wand and placing it back on the table in front of him. Really, it would be nice to work on his patronus again; it had been a long time since he needed to conjure his patronus, and he was probably a bit rusty. Besides, he loved the look on Hero’s face when he was successful in performing a charm, especially a complicated one that was far past his educational level.

Hero wasn’t exactly one to believe that his blush was too attractive. In fact, quite the opposite; he thought it betrayed too much emotion. He wanted to be more like Thad -- not exactly betraying whatever emotion was going through his mind at that time. But…showing his emotions seemed to be the only thing that separated him from when he wasn’t on his pills -- other than the obvious, of course. He couldn’t just hide his emotions away, even as much as he wanted to. But when Thad smiled, his ideas just melted away. He didn’t need to hide his emotions. Thad liked him just the way he was, and that was the only thing that mattered to him at that moment.
”You did?” Hero asked, blinking -- it was hard to believe that Thad had problems with spells similar to the way Hero had, even if the problems had been overcome by now. It was an odd image, seeing a younger Thad struggling with a spell. ”I…think I have the perfect idea to use,” he said slowly, smiling at Thad. Surely, he wouldn’t tell the other; it was including Thad, and it wasn’t exactly something you tell someone you like when they don’t know that they like you. But Hero didn’t care. It made him happy, just the idea of having Thad like him like that. But that was probably as far as he was going to get; a small idea used for a patronus that didn’t even get past second base.
Hero had been about to open up the Charms book he had struggled to get when Thad’s book was summoned. His eyes widened and he blinked a few times. Had he missed the incantation? Surely, he hadn’t. He had just…done it silently. So Thad knew how to do nonverbal spells? Hero felt a pang of envy -- damn Seventh Years, always learning the cool things. ”In our…room, can you teach me how to do a nonverbal spell?” Hero asked him quietly, as if afraid of a rejection -- and figuring it was probably going to elicit one. It seemed like such a complicated piece of magic. But it was worth a shot, wasn’t it?
He gave a light laugh. ”I wonder what type of animal my patronus will be,” Hero said, opening the book to the part about Fidelius Charms. ”Any ideas?” He looked up at Thad for a moment, obviously quite interested in the response -- and choking back his damn fear.

“Of course I did.” Thad responded quickly, not wanting to make the younger boy feel bad about his previous failures. “It’s not exactly an easy charm after all, is it?” Thad honestly had a bit of trouble with the Patronus charm. It wasn’t until the research had allowed him the chance to imagine a life without the voice as his happy thought. When Hero mentioned that he already had a thought in mind, Thad smiled encouragingly. He would have asked what the thought was, but worried by the idea that he might be asked the same question. He didn’t want to admit the thought, especially since Hero didn’t know about the voice.
When he had summoned his book, Hero had looked incredibly impressed. Thad smiled gently to himself, not meeting the other boy’s eye, instead focusing on the book in front of him. Finally, after a few moments, he heard Hero’s voice and glanced up, looking curious at the boy’s request. He sounded nervous yet again, like he thought that Thad was going to turn him down or something. “Of course I can. It’s a bit difficult, but you should be able to manage it.” He responded, tilting his head and resting his chin on his hand.
Thad bit his lip, trying to think of a good response to Hero’s question. It was a difficult one—after all, a patronus reflected the inner most qualities of a person. He spoke carefully and slowly, choosing his words. “That’s a difficult question.” He said quietly, meeting the boy’s eyes. “I didn’t expect my patronus’ form until it actual formed.” His fingers itched to pick up his wand and perform the charm himself, but thought it was inappropriate to do so in the library. “I mean, I certainly didn’t expect a ram to be my inner animal.”
Thad picked up a quill, jotting down a list of things they had to try once they had performed the Fidelius charm on the classroom. He recalled for a moment the chapter he had read in the updated version of A History of Magic, where the group called Dumbledore’s Army learned new spells from each other. Perhaps he and Hero’s motive wasn’t so impressive or noble, but he could see the similarities.
