Most of the students were starting to get it now-- fewer and fewer squawks from the cockatoos could be heard as they were silenced, turned into rather festive party masks. He had chosen something pretty basic as a refresher for the first class of the year-- they had already gone over animate to non-animate Transfiguration toward the end of the previous year. It sort of let him get the feel of the class and how much work would need to be done to get them up to the required standards of a sixth year Transfiguration student.
He kept the required OWL score for his class relatively low-- so long as you had an Acceptable, you could take his NEWT level class. He believed firmly that Transfiguration was something that any student needed to learn, and translated that belief into his teaching. While someone might not need to turn a cockatoo into a mask in order to survive, but turning sand into rice in a desert in order to eat is something quite similar. This class was about teaching Transfiguration in a fun way, but the fundamentals could allow you to survive.
With so many people starting to already finish their Transfigurations, Maddox figured he could let them out a bit early, rather than coup them up in his room when they had all clearly finished. He flicked his wand, the homework assignment writing itself out on the blackboard behind him-- two feet of parchment as a review of animate to non-animate Transfiguration.
As he waited for the assignment to finish writing himself, he glanced around at his students. It was always interesting to see group dynamics unfold in front of him-- he could see over the years friendships form, fights break them up, relationships come and go. It was quite interesting, at least for him as sort of an outsider.

Aisu listened to Rose, as she accepted his apology, which was great for him. Except what she said next was bit confusing. He shook his head and sighed. “I’m not making any promises with that one, but I would like to talk to him…. If that’s what he wants that is.” He answered calmly. Aisu hadn’t even noticed Gia come in, as she hadn’t spoken, so it was only natural that Aisu didn’t know Gia had even come in.
The blind wizard listened to what both girls had said, and honestly he was probably going to go with what Dominique said, because she had given him more detail than Rose had, and detail is what he had to go on with something he’s never seen before and never will. “Thanks for the info, you two.” He answered.
Aisu closed his eyes, even though it was completely pointless. He tried to picture a feathered mask… which was harder for him, since he didn’t really know what colors to use, nor did he even know what said colors looked like, although he had been told different colors before, but that never really described anything for him, only made him wonder what the colors looked like. Since the only color he knew of and could actually see was black, he decided to use that. Aisu opened his eyes and took out his wand, before he pointed it at the bird, and tapped it gingerly on the head.
The bird changed into a black feathered masquerade eye-mask. The feathers and mask were the same color of black, the male put his wand back into the folds of his robes, before he placed his fingers on the table, and lightly dragged them around the table, searching for the mask he had changed from a cockatoo into a masquerade mask. After a bit of searching his shared desk, he had found his mask, how did he know it was his mask? Because Dom and Rose were currently playing around acting like spoiled rich women who were at a party with theirs. He picked up his mask, running his fingers gingerly over it, trying to figure out if he had done it right or not. Well at least it hadn’t squawked yet, so that was good sign. He raised his hand for the second time since class started. “Professor Maddox… Is this right?” Aisu asked, he couldn’t help feeling a bit self-cautious over a simple masquerade mask, that he couldn’t even tell if it looked right or not.

Rose's mood seemed to be improving once again, noted Dominique, making her smile widely. She wasn't even paying attention to professor Maddox anymore, more focused on the friends surrounding her. "I'm sure he didn't, darling. If he did then we can... I don't know, transfigure him some chocolate or something to cheer him up!" she said jokingly. Dominique really hoped she was right because she wanted to see Rose happy, since she seemed to have all the begging-of-year-luck this time.
The redhead turned her head to glance at other people's works, just out of curiosity, and she could see Aisu already transfiguring his bird into a black mask which was quite beautiful and elegant, in her opinion. "Whoa, nice mask Aisu!" she said enthusiastically. Her eyes turned to the blackboard where an assignment was already being scribbled, making her groan slightly. Homework on the first day, really?
The little mocking act of high society was making her laugh behind her mask. She loved the idea of attending a Mascarade ball some day, but for now, she was enjoying joking about it. "Thanks, it took me a few days to craft this mask. Now, may I have this dance, milady?" she said, extending the hand that was not holding the mask to her face to Rose and inclining her body in a sort of reverence.
Dominique intended on staging a little dance around the class, hopefully getting Gia up on her feet too. She imagined her little performance wouldn't annoy Maddox, seeing as he was a pretty laid back teacher, and both Rose and herself had already succeed in the task at hand.

She grinned at Aisu, happy that both of them were relatively calm at the moment. "If you need a mediator," she began, keeping her tone even, "I'll volunteer my services. He definitely wants to talk." After he thanked them for their help, she murmured back a brief "You're welcome," watching as he created a gorgeous mask. "It's so pretty!" She enthused happily, feeling herself return to her usual mentality. It was generally quite impossible for her to remain upset for too long, her sunny disposition was both a blessing and a curse in that sense.
Copying down Maddox's homework laboriously, she groaned, cursing it inwardly. Homework on the first night? It was so ridiculous and absurd, but Maddox was a fair teacher in general, so she decided to try to do it quickly and get it done with, especially since if she didn't, she'd quickly receive a Howler from her mother, who always seemed to know when she was missing an assignment. The pressure was slowly getting to her, helped by a deep-rooted suspicion that she wasn't a smart enough student to belong in the school. Truly, she would try putting in more effort in general this year, but it seemed futile, a battle she'd already lost.
Taking Dom's hand, she cracked up, spinning her around in a circle. This was so preferable to sitting there like a lemming, waiting for the period to end, and she would face the consequences later. Waltzing their way over to Gia, she poked her best friend, "Dance with us, dahlingg!" It felt so freeing to be with her friends, enjoying their company without fear or worry. Her entire face was alit with laughter as she turned to Dom, whispering, "The entire class needs to start dancing with us...like, now." They were definitely missing out on how entertaining this was.

It was so clear to Gia that Transfiguration wasn't going to go very well for her this year. Everyone else seemed to be doing fine, except for her. She hated this class more than all the others, mostly because Gia never had to try very hard to do well. Maybe not incredible work, but she was always above average...except of course for this class, where she always barely scraped by.
Dominique and Rose seemed to be having a good time, both successful with their masks and having a conversation with Aisu. Gia was a little bit concerned when they got up and started dancing around the classroom. This wasn't exactly something that Gia was in the mood for, but she admired the way that her friends could pretend as though they didn't have any problems. Gia, on the other hand, had more trouble hiding her feelings. Or was it that she just had more problems in general? She'd never felt that way until now.
She looked up at Dom and Rose when they came over to them, offering for her to dance with them. She would love to, on most days...but right now didn't feel like the best time for her. "I don't know how," she whined, slumping back in her chair and looking up at them a bit miserably. That was a complete lie and both Rose and Dom knew it; Gia had been taking dance since she was really young, and that would probably be what her life was about right now if she wasn't at Hogwarts.

Maddox glanced up as he heard his name called, groaning as he stood up. He had just started to get comfortable, but then again, this was his job, so he shouldn't complain so much. Winding his way through the various aisles and desks, he made a few comments on the different masks/cockatoos he saw until he arrived back at Aisu, Rose and Dom's desk. Gently taking the mask from Aisu's hands, he examined it, noting the smooth transition from mask to feather. He placed it back on the desk again, complimenting the boy on his work. "Very nice, Aisu. Good work." he praised, giving a smile even though the boy couldn't see it.
He was almost always proud of his students when they did a good job, and was disappointed when they were unsuccessful. Noticing Dom and Rose fooling around, he stepped over to them, brow raised. "Back to your table, Weasley's." he said, smirking slightly and gesturing to their table. "Stop distracting Miss Parker."
Turning around to Gia, his smile fell a little as he saw how little progress she had made with her mask. "Is something wrong, Miss Parker?" he asked cautiously. As a teacher, he had learned to be sort of careful around students, especially ones who seemed to be having trouble in their personal lives. It was only the first day of classes, but something was clearly bothering Miss Parker. He had always noticed that this certainly wasn't Gia's best class, but he had never seen her like this. Bored, maybe, but not upset like this, so he assumed that it was some outside source.

Aisu hadn’t expected to get praised for his masquerade mask, especially by Dominique and Rose, but then again maybe he was simply over thinking things. Like their reactions for one, or maybe they were just lying that was a possibility… No wait, they couldn’t be lying, as he would known it if they were and/or had been. “Thank you?” He responded, a bit hesitant, as his cheeks reddened from the praise and comments, which weren’t about to go to his head, as Aisu didn’t have much of an ego or pride for that matter.
The blind wizard blinked when Rose offered her services to being a mediator, for both him and Allen. It wasn’t a bad idea really, as long as Rose didn’t play favorites and sided with Allen, just because Allen was her boyfriend, that would only make things ten times worse, and wouldn’t be very good for anyone, because not only would Aisu, be furiously pissed off at Allen, he would also be furiously angry at Rose as well, for playing favorites. “That would be great.” he said with a small smile.
Aisu blinked in confusion, when he got no response, in fact all he heard were steps away from him, as the two danced away, which made him mad obviously. As he had been completely ignored, that was bound to make anyone mad. Aisu mumbled a few choice cursing in Japanese, before he turned to the student behind him. All he had asked was what the homework was, and after getting the answer, he thanked the student and turned back to his desk, just in time to feel Professor Maddox take his mask from his hands, and he guessed the man examined it, before he heard it being placed on the table again, he also heard the man tell him, that he had done a nice job. “Thanks, Professor.” He said, as he took out his wand and used his free hand to search for the mask again, before he found it, and turned it back into a cockatoo, where he put away his wand, and held out one of his fingers to the bird, allowing the small fragile creature to perch on his finger, while he gingerly ran his finger over the bird’s soft feathers. He had simply stopped paying attention to what was going on around him. But he had vaguely heard Dom, Rose and Gia’s responses to each other, about dancing, and he also somewhat heard Professor Maddox getting onto Dom and Rose for pestering Gia, but that was all he had paid attention to, as his focuse was back on the bird currently perced on his index finger.

Dominique smiled widely, knowing that Rose had already copied down the homework and she could just ask her later what it was. She didn't feel like torturing herself at the moment with whatever it might be, specially in the middle of their dance. When Gia turned down their invitation, the redhead frowned , knowing her statement was far, very far from the truth. If there was someone that knew about dancing, it was Gia.
"Come off it, Gia, you're way better at it than any of us!" she said, her tone both complaining and praising, somehow. But Dominique knew Gia wasn't in the best of moods yet, and the whole mask making thing didn't seem to be improving her mood either. "Just relax a little!" This comment was valid for both mask making and the dance, but mostly for the mask. She took off her mask and placed a small kiss on Gia's cheek, but just then professor Maddox arrived and ordered them back to their table.
Dom sighed heavily, taking Rose's hand and waltzing them back to their table whispering "Partypooper" as soon as they were out of earshot. "Man, Gia's still anxious... I wonder what exactly went on in James' room," she whispered as they arrived back at their table with one last twirl. Aisu was absentmindendly petting his cockatoo, already transformed back perfectly, probably not one feather different from it's original form if she knew the blind wizard at all.
